Font Stress Test

The following procedure can be used to test fonts before they are used in production.

The procedure

Create a test template design and add two text boxes with the following sample text using the font to be tested.

Title Case Variant

Mr. Jeffry “Fjord” O’Flanagan-Vázquez, M.D. — Chloe-Zoë de la Rosa & Jérôme Phillippe. Szabó-Łukasiewicz, Ana-María Peña. (A-Z) 0-9.

All-Caps Variant

THE VÁZQUEZ & O’FLANAGAN WEDDING. WALTER MACKENZIE III. AVERY J. QUARTZ-SMITH. ZÖE PEÑA-FRANÇOIS. HAMBURGEFONTSIV.

Visual Checklist

If the font shows boxes, gaps, or ligature failures (bad spacing between certain letters), it should not be used.

The following checklist can be used as a guide.

Check

What to Look For

“Tofu”

Empty boxes (▯) or missing accents like Á, é, ñ, ö, ç  

Kerning Gaps

Huge white spaces between double letters such as l,j and f and letters like V-A, W-A, or A-Y. 

eg: “V  ázquez” should be “Vázquez”

Ligature Failures

Letters overlapping or "tangling" (like the fj in Fjord).

Symbols

Ensure the & and ’ (apostrophe) are legible and match the font style.
