Scope
Broadly, Face Detection and Recognition can be used with families to perform two tasks.
Where a family already exists, Face Recognition can associate (copy) the subjects into the family
Where the family does not yet exist, Face Recognition can be used to create the family, match the image to it and associate the subjects
Associate subjects to their families
Associating subjects to their families is essential in order to create family products where the family image and the subject images appear together in the one product. It is also needed to enable Family Switching in IOS.
Prior to Face Recognition, subjects were associated to their families by the manual “drag and drop” method. This procedure was not only time consuming but required the user to know which families the subjects belonged too.
To associate subjects to their families
In Images Mode, ensure face detection has been performed on both subject and family images.
In Details Mode, select all the families.
From the menu, select Families>Associate with subject faces.
The subjects will be associated with (copied to) their family.
TIP
To select all the families, ensure the ‘All’ folder is selected in the folder tree, then select the Families tab in the main section of Details Mode. This will list one row per family and allows the user to select them all.
Create families with face recognition
Face recognition can be used with unmatched family images to perform one or more of the following functions.
Where a family already exists and has an image matched to it with the same faces, the unmatched image can be automatically matched the existing family.
Where a matching family does not already exist it is possible to:
Create a new family
Match the unmatched image to the family
Associate subjects to the family
Name the family based on the last names of the subjects
To create families from unmatched images
In Images Mode, ensure face detection has been performed on both subject and family images
Select the unmatched family images
From the menu select Images>Create for unmatched>Families ..
From the popup, select Recognize and detect same faces
Select other options as desired
also match with existing families - to match to any existing families already created
associated with matched subject faces - to copy (associate) subjects into the family
also name with associated subjects - to name the family according to the last name of the associated subjects

How the families are named
When families are automatically created using Face Recognition, the families will be named based on the last names of the associated subjects. When all subjects share the same last name, the family adopts that name. However, in cases where subjects have differing last names, the software combines them to create a name.
In situations where subjects are not associated, the name defaults to using the family image's filename as the family name.
It's important to remember that you always retain the flexibility to manually rename families to any desired designation, ensuring complete control over your family organization.
Naming convention in summary
Where associated subjects have the same last name, the family will be named with that name
Where associated subjects have different last names, they will joined (separated by a comma) to form the family name
In the absence of family names, the image filename of the family image will be used as the family name
In all circumstances the user can rename the family as desired by selecting Edit>Rename
